Berthe di Vito-Delvaux (1915-2005) was a Belgian composer. She wrote several works for clarinet, several or which appear on an album produced by her daughter. Most of her works for clarinet, which include several pieces for clarinet and piano, as well as wind chamber music and chamber music with voice, are available for purchase or loan, although a small number have tragically fallen out of print, and copies are nowhere to be found.
Berthe di Vito-Delvaux (1915 – 2005)
Berthe di Vito-Delvaux (1915-2005) was a Belgian composer, born in Angleur, Belgium in 1915. She studied theory with Désiré Duysens, harmony with Louis Lavoye and piano with Jeanne House at the Royal Academy of Music of Liège, and composition under Léon Jongen at the Brussels Royal Academy of Music.1
For the clarinet, di Vito-Delvaux composed several works. For clarinet and piano she wrote a Suite, Op. 14, and a Sonata, Op. 61. Her Op. 26, titled Divertissiment, for Clarinet and Orchestra, also exists in a version for clarinet and piano. For clarinet and chamber ensemble, she wrote a Suite, Op. 18, for woodwind quartet. Her Opp. 101 and 112 are both for woodwind quintet, and in 1952 she composed a reed trio for clarinet, oboe, and bassoon. In addition, she also composed for clarinet and voice. Scroll to the bottom of the page or click here to see her full list of works for clarinet.
To date, most of her works can be purchased or borrowed from libraries across the globe, however, most regrettably some of her works went out of print when her publishers closed their doors. As of the publication of this article, her Op. 14 suite for clarinet and piano is out of print, and no known copies are held at any libraries. Her Op. 151, a trio for flute, clarinet, and harp, seems to have succumbed to the same fate.
During her lifetime she received several distinguished honors and awards, including:
- Maria Prize from the City of Liège 1938
- Prix de Rome in 1943
- Composition prize from the province of Limburg 1952
- Modeste Grétry Prize from Société d’Auteurs Belge – Belgische Auteurs Maatschappi (SABAM) in 1962
- Consecration Prize from the Province of Liège in 1978.[3]
